Hi! My name is Sarah Mikkonen. I was born in Wisconsin and moved to Michigan at the age of 5. I grew up on the shore of Lake Michigan and attended college at Michigan Tech and the University of Rochester. I moved to the Boston area in 2010 and I currently live near Salem, Massachusetts.
I started writing in high school with a group of friends who would swap short stories in the library before school every morning. During that time, I also wrote my first couple novel-length stories as a result of NaNoWriMo. They were truly awful, and I don’t believe I have copies of them anymore, but they did give me the confidence that I could write something that long.
I stopped writing in college and for several years after, until I slowly picked up the habit again around 2015. I continued to write short stories for my own enjoyment until 2019, when I wrote a piece as a gift for my girlfriend about a werewolf who played roller derby. She demanded more. I workshopped the idea for a few weeks and it eventually became Crossover.
In addition to writing, I also enjoy sewing, gardening, and roller derby. My husband and I grow chile peppers every summer on the balcony of our apartment. We don’t have much space, but we do the best with what we have.
I developed an interest in roller derby around 2012 or 2013, although I didn’t start playing until 2018. I played for the Cosmonaughties and the Boston Common of Boston Roller Derby, although I am currently not skating, due to medical issues. I hope to return to skating in the future, but if I can’t, I would like to become an official or a coach.
